The NRSWA Unit S1: Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course in London provides participants with the knowledge required to obtain SWQR certification and receive their SWQR ID card. Upon completion participants will be able to seek work monitoring the installation and maintenance of signs, cones, barriers and traffic lights in accordance with the New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Act of 1991.
Who is the course for
The 1-day NRSWA Unit S1 Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding course is for anyone that needs to monitor and supervise the temporary signage, cones, guards and lights on the roads that direct traffic and people around the place of work. Previously known as Unit 10, this course is for supervisors only who do not undertake any physical work.
Delivery
The course is delivered through a combination of classroom learning and practical activities in 1 day. You will then be required to complete assessments and a short online exam for the unit.

Outcome
After successful completion of the course you will be awarded a certificate from the awarding body, from one of the following; CABWI, SQA, Lantra or City and Guilds. You will then be registered on the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR), and you will receive your own SWQR ID card.

Objectives
Following successful completion of the NRSWA Unit S1: Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course participants will:
- Possess the ability to supervise signing, lighting and guarding installation at active job sites on roads and highways.
- Ensure all such installations conform to the New Roads and Street Works (NRSW) Act of 1991.
- Oversee the installation of temporary traffic signals.
- Possess a thorough understanding of all relevant roadworks regulations and standards.
- Be able to identify and assess hazards on active job sites.
- Help ensure through vehicles and pedestrians can transit to the job site safely.
- Supervise those setting up and removing temporary job site controls.
How long does the qualification last
Your certificate and card are valid for 5 years and will show the unit you are qualified in to work on the roads.

Goals
The goal of the NRSWA Unit S1: Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course is to ensure participants understand the myriad dangers created by Street Works and how to protect both workers and the general public from those dangers through the implementation of proper signing, lighting and guarding.
Upon completion of the course, participants will also be able to recognise the various conditions that might arise which would require the implementation of special measures, including the use of temporary, portable traffic signals, road closures and more. The overall goal being to facilitate the unfettered movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic through the active job site.
What does the course cover?
The NRSWA Unit S1: Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding training course will cover the following:
- The creation of a detailed plan for a job site in accordance with the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice.
- How to make decisions based on such a plan and how to formulate recommendations for remedial action.
- Real-world observation of an operative installing and removing SLG components from a site.
- Assessing the working practices of an operative and explaining why you agree or disagree with their methods.
